Harjot Uppal
MUS President
harjotu@student.ubc.ca
Hi! My name is Harjot (she/her), and I am a second-year VFMP student. Prior to starting medicine, I completed my undergraduate degree at UBC in Honours Integrated Sciences, where I also had the privilege of serving as President of the Science Undergraduate Society. I am super excited to bring my experience in student leadership to the Medical Undergraduate Society, where I look forward to launching new initiatives, assessing student needs, and representing our community through focused advocacy efforts in partnership with the Faculty. Outside of school, you can often find me cheering on the Canucks! Feel free to reach out if you have any ideas or projects you would like to see the MUS bring to life—I am always happy to hear new suggestions and make things happen!
1. Writing a 16-page proposal with 14 recommendations on how the Medical Sciences Building at UVic could be made better. Using this proposal as a framework, we secured $15,000 from the MUS to revitalize our student lounge.
2. Creating the IMP Student Spaces Committee, a group of students engaged in ensuring student spaces are clean, stocked, and working best for students.
3. Advocating for students' ability to attend lectures online, which included co-authoring a letter to faculty with 7 recommendations to improve the lecture and lab experience.
4. Proposing changes to MUS finance structure so funds are now equally distributed between the sites, roll over from year to year, and have more clear reporting requirements.
If you are an IMP student and you want to make change that is seen, felt, and appreciated by your colleagues, don't hesitate to reach out.
Being in the second year of my position as the SMP Site Lead, I am excited to continue working with my amazing peers both in Kelowna and across the province to facilitate community and engagement. I'm working hard to explore options for new SMP student spaces for studying, recreation, and learning this year. This role, and my position as a fourth year medical student make me proud of SMP and the culture and corroboration that we will be handing off to the continuing and incoming students.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or just want to chat about random shower thoughts and existential crises 🙂
