Political Advocacy Committee

About Us

We are an official branch of the MUS, and part of the national CFMS GAAC (Government Affairs and Advocacy Committee). Our mandate includes but is not limited to:

  1. Outlining educational, political, and social issues of importance to medical students
  2. Advocating for change on behalf of UBC medical students
  3. Educating and training students how to advocate for systemic change

What we do

Some of what we do is help plan and implement CFMS Lobby Day, plan and conduct BC Lobby Day, organize education events, develop position papers, engage with medical curriculum, and provide input into other GAAC initiatives. We believe strongly in the CanMeds role of Health Advocate which includes the responsibility to “respond to the needs of the communities or patient populations they serve by advocating with them for system-level change” (Royal College). Therefore, our advocacy work focuses on patient and community issues (such as the social determinants of health), and we are striving towards more bottom-up engagement. Any current UBC medical student is welcome on PAC, and we happily collaborate with other groups interested in patient-focused health advocacy.
